On behalf of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Acting Director-General Daniel Hung of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Atlanta donated 100,000 medical masks to the State of North Carolina on May 27. The donation was received by Assistant Director Quincy Davis of the NC Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Management. This donation was shipped directly from Taiwan to the warehouse of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety to support frontline medical personnel.
NC Governor Roy Cooper, NC Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, US Senator of NC Thom Tills, and NC State Representative Jamie Boles all thanked Taiwan for its generous donation of medical equipment. Taiwan is glad to have such a strong and enduring friendship with the State of North Carolina.
Secretary of State Elaine Marshall sent a letter to Acting Director-General Daniel Hung, in which she expressed her gratitude to President Tsai Ing-wen and the people of Taiwan. She described this donation as an illustration of President Tsai’s commitment to providing valuable assistance through humanitarian efforts and global partnerships. Secretary Marshall also expressed that the donation is an excellent example of the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the State of North Carolina and Taiwan, in addition to praising the outstanding diplomacy works of TECO Atlanta officers.
Acting Director-General Daniel Hung expressed that Taiwan recognizes the drastic impact of COVID-19 in North Carolina, which led to this donation to assist healthcare workers. He also admired the global partnership and longstanding friendship of the U.S. and Taiwan. As President Tsai Ing-wen stated in her interview with Time Magazine, “COVID-19 is a humanitarian disaster that requires the joint efforts of all countries.” Hence, Taiwan is pleased to fulfill President Tsai’s promise of helping its international partners in urgent need of supplies.
Taiwan has already donated over 33 million masks to heavily impacted countries and regions since April. This donation was a part of Taiwan’s fourth wave of humanitarian efforts and global partnership, which included about 9 million masks to the United States and 100,000 to North Carolina specifically. Taiwan is happy to offer support in this time of need to its sister-state of North Carolina, which it has enjoyed a friendly alliance with Taiwan for three decades.
