Director-General and Mrs. Douglas Y.T. Hsu Host the 108th National Day Reception in Boston

Director-General and Mrs. Douglas Y.T. Hsu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston hosted a reception for the 108th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel on October 4, 2019. More than 700 people attended the reception, including New England State Senators, Representatives, local dignitaries, members of the Consular Corps of Boston, Boston Taiwanese community leaders, scholars, and students. The National Day Reception opened with four Taiwanese cadets from Vermont Norwich University holding the national flags of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the United States, followed by singing the National Anthems of the United States and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Director-General Hsu noted that Taiwan has made great progress in many areas under President Tsai Ing-wen’s leadership. Taiwan, as a responsible stakeholder in the region, is actively involved in the international community and committed to fulfilling its duty as a global citizen by providing international aid to convey the value of “Taiwan Can Help.” Taiwan will also continue to strengthen value-based diplomatic links, and establish Taiwan's irreplaceable strategic importance, which is supported by the United States and other like-minded countries around the world to participate in the United Nations (UN), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Mr. Hsu noted that Taiwan-US relations remain excellent. During stopovers in New York and Denver on President Tsai Ing-wen’s Journey of Freedom, Democracy, and Sustainability in July, 2019, it set many records including the longest transit time in the United States, and the first time that a R.O.C (Taiwan) President attended public events with Taiwan allies' permanent representatives to the United Nations at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO-New York).

Mr. Hsu also noted that Taiwan and New England maintain a close relationship in bilateral trade, educational, and cultural relations. Mr. Hsu expressed his well wishes that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the United States continue to enjoy an even stronger friendship and close partnership well into the future.

U.S. Senators and Representatives, Governors, Speakers of various States House of Representatives, and mayors of Boston, Newton, Worcester, Quincy (MA), Central Falls, Pawtucket, Cranston (RI), and Manchester (NH) all congratulated the celebration of the National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
