In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, Director General Yvonne Hsiao of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Houston was invited by Principal Mandy Antolini to attend the “Asian Heritage Celebration: Explore Taiwanese Culture” event at Shadow Oaks Elementary School on May 22.
The event, co-organized by Shadow Oaks Elementary and the Houston Chinese School Association, brought together students, parents, and faculty members for an afternoon immersed in Taiwanese culture. Under the guidance of Taiwanese-American music teacher Ms. Hsiao-Chuan Teng, students gave a stunning performance of the well-known Mandarin song “Jasmine Flower,” impressing the audience with their accurate pronunciation and heartfelt delivery.
In addition to the performances, attendees enjoyed a variety of cultural activities, including a tasting of traditional Taiwanese snacks, hands-on calligraphy demonstrations, and booths featuring information on Mandarin language education, as well as travel and study opportunities in Taiwan. TECO in Houston also hosted a booth to promote Taiwan’s tourism and educational resources.
Director General Hsiao and her colleagues from TECO expressed their appreciation for the school’s efforts in introducing Taiwanese culture to the local community.
TECO in Houston is proud to work with local Taiwanese organizations to promote cultural exchange and deepen the understanding of Taiwan among our American friends.
