Highlighting the tournament's grueling schedule of "eight games in eight days," DG Ma expressed his confidence that UCI's renowned NCAA Division 1 defensive toughness and grit will help them rise to the challenge. He also warmly welcomed the players to experience the most passionate basketball fans in Asia, the best night markets in the world, and the most authentic boba tea they will ever have.
However, DG Ma candidly added: "We truly hope every player has the time of their lives, plays hard, and stays healthy. But make no mistake—when the tip-off happens, I am 100% rooting for Team Taiwan to beat you and keep the championship at home!" This authentic "declaration" instantly sparked laughter across the room.
Jokes aside, DG Ma encouraged the athletes to embrace their roles not only as representatives of UCI, but as ambassadors of American basketball and culture.
U.S. Representative Dave Min, Irvine Mayor Larry Agran, Irvine City Councilmember Melinda Liu, and the co-host, the Orange County Taiwanese American Chamber of Commerce (TCCOC), attended the event to send their best wishes. Head Coach Russell Turner, who led the team to the 2023 championship, emphasized his deep respect for the tournament's long history and cherished this opportunity for exchange, adding that every team brings a unique style of play and UCI will give its all in every game.
The 45th William Jones Cup tips off on August 15! We wish the UCI team an amazing journey and a great performance, and we wish Team Taiwan a victorious start to keep the championship on our home court! Zot Zot Zot!
