Aiming to attract outstanding overseas talents to work at Taiwan’s top universities, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and Ministry of Education (MOE) jointly hosted four Recruitment Information Seminars in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Boston from April 1 to April 7, 2018.
On April 3rd, Science Division and Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles (TECO-LA) collaborated together with Professor Hsian Rong Tseng and Eric Pei-Yu Chiou of UCLA to organize the seminar at UCLA California NanoSystem Institute, in which Minister Liang-Gee Chen of MOST and the Deputy Minister Leeh-Ter Yao of MOE shared detailed information of several government newly launched programs , including MOST’s Young Scholar Fellowship Program and the MOE’s "Jade Mountain Scholars Project". This seminar attracted more than 250 professors and young scholars from Caltech, UCLA, UC Irvine and UC San Diego.
"Jade Mountain Scholars Project" is specially designated to support universities in Taiwan to attract the world’s elite by providing internationally competitive salaries and benefits. Candidates must be employed by a university in Taiwan, and the university must apply for the scholarship on their behalf. Those who have worked at an international renowned research institution or company for at least 10 years and have international academic reputation or performance are eligible to apply for "Jade Mountain Scholars Project". Those who are newly employed and whose last completed education is within ten years can apply for Jade Mountain Young Scholar Project. In addition to their base salary, Jade Mountain Scholars will receive a supplemental salary of 5 million NTD per year for 3 consecutive years and Jade Mountain Young Scholar will receive a supplemental salary of 1.5 million NTD for 5 consecutive years.
The delegation was comprised of presidents or top administrators from 11 research oriented universities in Taiwan, including Taipei Medical University, National Cheng-Kung University, National Central University, National Taiwan University, National Chung Hsing University, National Sun Yat-sen University, National Chenchi University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Chiao Tung University and National Tsing Hua University. The representatives from universities also provided in-depth recruitment information for talents in the seminar.
The Education Division, TECO-LA interviewed the Deputy Minister Yao and 11 university presidents or representatives and post the video on the Facebook page for sharing the information about the Jade Mountain Scholar Project. It is hoped that through these seminars, more international talents will consider Taiwan and eventually their expertise can take root in Taiwan’s academic environment and increase the visibility and impact of Taiwan’s higher education in the international community.
