Press release No. 018
Regarding the statement issued by Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the United Nations, on September 14th, which falsely claims sovereignty over Taiwan, deliberately misinterprets UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, and wrongfully associates it with the so-called "One China Principle" in an attempt to create the illusion that Taiwan is subordinate to the People's Republic of China, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO-NY) strongly objects to this erroneous statement and reiterates its position as follows:
- The Republic of China (Taiwan) is an independent and sovereign democratic state. Taiwan has never been a part of PRC. The internationally recognized reality is that under the status quo, neither democratic Taiwan nor communist China is subordinate to the other. Only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent its 23.5 million people in the UN system and the international community. The government of the PRC has no right to a say in the matter.
- UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, only addresses the issue of China’s representation in the UN. It contains no mention of Taiwan. It does not authorize the PRC to represent the Taiwanese people in the UN system, nor does it state that Taiwan is a part of the PRC. The PRC has continued its disgraceful efforts to distort UNGA Resolution 2758 and wrongfully associate the resolution with the so-called “One China principle” in an attempt to mislead the international community and legitimize its recent provocative actions in the Taiwan Strait.
- Seeking meaningful participation in the UN system and making contributions to the international community is the shared expectation and consensus of the people of Taiwan. The PRC’s distortion of the Resolution 2758 has long deprived Taiwan of the right to participate in the UN System. It also denies the international community an opportunity to benefit from Taiwan’s potential contributions. TECO-NY condemns these PRC’s efforts that infringe on the UN principle of universality and contradict the spirit of “leaving no one behind.”
