Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco co-organized with the Asian American Studies Department of San Francisco State University to screen a feature-length documentary “Love Boat: Taiwan” on October 15, 2019, at San Francisco State University.
Director General Joseph Ma said at the opening that “Love Boat: Taiwan” is one of the most fascinating documentaries in Taiwan this year. The film is one of the best mediums through which to understand a culture, and “Love Boat: Taiwan” proudly stands as a cultural ambassador promoting cross-cultural understanding.
The study tour program first started in 1967, well mirrored the history of how Taiwan used soft power to connect with the rest of the world. Those participants returned home with a greater understanding of Taiwan’s democratization, an appreciation of Taiwanese culture, and better Chinese language skills.
As a witness in 1982, Professor Valerie Soe, director of “Love Boat: Taiwan,” started researching and filming in 2015. She then took her family to visit Taiwan in the summer of 2016 to conduct more interviews for this film. Since this film premiered in Taipei this May, it has been screened at many film festivals in Asia and the United States and will be screened at many more in the coming months.
