Taiwan and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines hosted a landmark handover ceremony at the New Modern Port in Kingstown on Tuesday, January 13th, 2026. On behalf of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Ambassador Fiona Huei-Chun Fan, officially presented items as stated in the title to the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) to bolster food security and disaster response capabilities.
Ambassador Fan emphasized that the bond between Taiwan and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is forged by shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, which have kept the two nations standing "shoulder to shoulder" as steadfast partners since 1981. She also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for the steadfast support of Taiwan’s international participation.
Highlighting the tangible impact of this cooperation, Ambassador Fan detailed the handover of a firefighting truck, 198 tons of rice and two containers of charitable goods—including over 600 rolls of fabric, 300 pairs of shoes, and various clothing items—contributed by the Taiwan Government and NGOs such as the Simply Help Foundation and the Wu Thun-Chih Foundation, with a total value of approximately USD $500,000. She noted that these gifts, along with the ongoing support for the Arnos Vale Acute Care Hospital and the Young Farmers’ Training Project, reflect Taiwan's commitment to building a resilient, safe, and healthy Vincentian community.
In his remarks, Honourable Major St. Clair Leacock, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Disaster Management and Immigration expressed his deep appreciation for the handover items, as an addition to reinforce the nation’s emergency response and social safety. He mentioned Taiwan’s constant support in public safety, noting our assistance to the nation, including the Questelles Government School after the recent fire and the installation of 320 CCTV cameras. He underscored that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines cherished the relation with Taiwan, believing the bilateral long-term development will ensure the benefits for all citizens of both nations.
Honourable Israel Bruce, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation, thanked Taiwan for the 198 tons of rice, which significantly contributes to national food security. Minister Bruce also lauded the newly launched Young Farmers’ Training Project, noting that Taiwan’s expertise in smart agriculture and IoT solutions is empowering the next generation of Vincentian farmers with the technology needed to face future climate and economic challenges with resolve.
Honourable Shevern John, Minister of Social Welfare and Community Empowerment, Ecclesiastical Affairs and National Heritage, highlighted the humanitarian spirit of sharing, particularly the two containers of charity items valued at over 120,000 USD. She remarked that the generosity of the Taiwanese people and NGO directly touches the lives of the most vulnerable, providing warmth and dignity through the provision of clothing and shoes, and reinforcing the social fabric of local communities during difficult times.
The ceremony concluded with a shared vision of progress and mutual support. Taiwan remains dedicated to fulfilling its role as a force for good in the international community and will continue to work closely with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to foster a prosperous and resilient future. The enduring friendship between the two nations continues to flourish, guided by solidarity and a shared commitment to the welfare of their people. (E)
