This year's APEC and UNFCCC meetings will be held in November, with an emphasis on climate change and sustainable development issues. Taiwan has been taking many local actions towards a better future for all. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) produced a short film "Change Begins in the Heartland," to share with the world Linbian Township's innovative solutions to the climate change challenge.
Synopsis:
In 2009, Typhoon Morakot destroyed much of Taiwan's agricultural heartland, including Linbian Township in southern Taiwan's Pingtung County. However, locals rebuilt, with a specific focus put on renewable energy such as solar power and smart-grid technology. Linbian's redevelopment projects were great successes, and in 2015 their smart micro-grid demonstration park received a silver prize from APEC's Energy Smart Communities Initiative Best Practices Awards Program. This positive response encouraged locals to share more of their experiences with the global community. It's just one of the ways Taiwan is doing its part to help take on climate change and build a better future for all.
