On June 23rd 2017, Representative Tu visited Co. Clare to meet with the Mayor of Ennis, leaders from Clare Chamber of Commerce and local businesspeople. The visit proved to be a great success and helped to promote bilateral economic and trade relations between Taiwan and Ireland.
Representative Tu was warmly welcomed by Mr. William Cahir; President of the Clare Chamber of Commerce and they exchanged views on the economic and social development of the region. In particular, discussions focused on the success of Shannon Airport, which was the first airport to introduce a "Free Trade Zone". The success of this scheme provided the inspiration for many similar projects in Taiwan and the world.
Representative Tu spoke to the County Council and Chamber about relations developing between Taiwan and Ireland. The current bilateral trade volume stands at €700 million making Ireland Taiwan’s 12th largest trading partner in Europe. There remains room for improvement in this and cooperation in agricultural products, ICT, science & technology and renewables show great potential for development.
Representative Tu also spoke to members of the local government of Taiwan’s world class R&D, digital products, heavy machinery and electronics sectors and of its free and open market of 23 million people. He stressed the importance of Taiwan’s strong democracy, rule of law and robust financial and judicial systems and remarked that Taiwan can function as a gateway to the broader Asian market for Irish businesspeople. To complete the visit, Representative Tu visited Craggaunowen Castle and Ennis Friary to take in the rich local history, arts and culture of this beautiful and innovative region of Ireland.
