Acclaimed Taiwanese contemporary artist Hung Yi’s “Fancy Animal Carnival” exhibition is coming to Washington DC in early May this year. Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) welcomes audiences to immerse themselves in Hung Yi’s colorful, vibrant, and festive animal sculptures through mid-October, 2017.
“American Eagle and Buffalo”, “Dragon Horse”, “Auspicious Triple Sheep”, “Dromedary Camel” and “Bactrian Camel” will be on display in downtown Washington DC at locations such as CityCenterDC, Herald Square, and Chinatown Park, all just a few blocks away from the National Mall, Verizon Center, National Portrait Gallery, and more. In addition, “Giraffe Fortune” will be on display right in front of TECRO’s Wisconsin Avenue office building, while more sculptures will be displayed in TECRO’s Twin Oaks estate such as “Yellow Ox”, “Round Dragon”, and more. These painted animal sculptures, full of folk culture and religion symbols, are all made by Hung Yi based on his own experience and observations of people’s daily life.
Hung Yi, born in 1970 in central Taiwan, is a contemporary artist. Hung’s art works represent joy and happiness by employing child-like design, bright colors, patterns and symbols of folk culture or religion. Drawing inspiration from life, he transforms all the elements, bringing art work back to people from where his inspiration comes. Because of their interactive nature and colorful characteristics, the audience always enjoys the exhibit and provides positive feedback.
This exhibition is jointly supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of China (Taiwan), TECRO, CityCenterDC, and the DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID). Taiwan Academy of TECRO invites the audience to experience the very unique Taiwanese public art installation at the Opening Reception with Hung Yi at 1:30PM on Thursday, May 4 at CityCenter DC.
