Acting Director General Daniel Hung and Deputy Director Tony Tai of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta attended the Overseas Chinese Association (OCA) – GA annual Lunar New Year celebration on February 9.
Acting DG Hung gave remarks at the banquet. He first wished everyone a happy new year, and said that the Year of the Rat symbolizes new beginnings, wealth and surplus. He noted that, on January 11, 2020, in the 7th direct election in Taiwan’s history, President Tsai Ing-Wen successfully won re-election as the 15th President of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Acting DG Hung told the audience that the Taiwanese people had once again demonstrated to the world their determination to safeguard their sovereignty, freedom, democracy and human rights.
He thanked allies for international support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, including ICAO, UNFCCC, and INTERPOL. He said that Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization is more urgent than ever in the wake of the outbreak and continuing spread of coronavirus. He also mentioned that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have said they welcome Taiwan’s participation.
Acting DG Hung also noted that, in a concerted effort to expand Taiwan’s presence across the Indo-Pacific, Taiwan has introduced the New Southbound Policy to strengthen Taiwan’s relationships with the 18 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Founded in 1973, the OCA is a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well being of Asian Americans in the United States. More than 300 guests attended the banquet. Distinguished guests included Japanese Consul General Kazuyuki Takeuchi, Korean Consul General Young-Jun Kim, Atlanta City Council President Felicia Moore, and Georgia State Representative Renee Unterman. The current OCA-GA president is OCAC Coordinator Louis Tseng.
